CIC Outraged by NDP Emergency Resolutions on the Middle East

For Immediate Release

Sept. 10, 2006
Ottawa, Ontario

The Canada-Israel Committee today characterized the two Middle East resolutions adopted by the New Democratic Party at its biennial policy convention in Quebec City as irresponsibly one-sided and dangerously misinformed.

"Despite the efforts of some caucus members to steer the party toward a constructive set of resolutions, the NDP will now be known for its biased positions and for lending support and credibility to terrorist entities like Hezbollah and Hamas that are committed to the destruction of the State of Israel", said CIC National Chair Marc Gold.

"The NDP had an opportunity to address such pressing concerns as the catastrophic situation in Darfur and the scourge of AIDS in Africa. It could have endorsed the efforts of all western nations in forcing a halt to Iran's reckless and dangerous drive to acquire nuclear weapons. Instead, the NDP allowed its policy convention to be hijacked by fringe elements determined to advance an anti-Israel agenda. The NDP will continue to preclude a constructive role for itself in the collective effort to bring stability and security to all peoples of the Middle East until it abandons these irresponsible and marginal policy positions", Gold continued.

"The CIC will continue to search for partners within the NDP with whom it can build a dialogue and partnership based on the desire to offer meaningful and responsible contributions to the pursuit of peace and stability in the Middle East and the end of the global threat of Islamic terror", Gold concluded.
