For Immediate Release
Jan. 2, 2007
CIC National Chair Moshe Ronen expressed condolences to the people of Israel and to the family of the former long-time Mayor of Jerusalem, Teddy Kollek, who died early today at the age of 95.
"As Mayor of Jerusalem for almost three decades, from 1965-1993, Mr. Kollek oversaw the city's revitalization and modernization following its historic reunification under Israeli sovereignty during the June 1967 Six Day War," Mr. Ronen said. "Mr. Kollek both recognized that Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish people and, in accordance with Jewish values, promoted co-existence amongst the diverse faith and cultural communities of the City of Peace," Mr. Ronen continued.
"Mr. Kollek's earlier contributions to Israel and the Jewish world were also vital. With his passing, Israel has lost yet another of its legendary, founding fathers," Mr. Ronen concluded.
