According to Reports: What’s Syria Up To In Lebanon?
October 23, 2008 – 1:46 pmIn his weekly Canadian Jewish News media analysis column “According to Reports,” Paul Michaels, CIC Director of Communications, discusses Syria’s decision to establish diplomatic relations with Lebanon.
Writes Michaels: “Syria has recently held four rounds of indirect peace talks with Israel using Turkey as a mediator. But last month, it raised concerns in Jerusalem (and Beirut) when it sent 10,000 troops to its border with Lebanon, ostensibly to stop cross-border smuggling after bombings in Tripoli and Damascus.
“So the announcement that Syria will open an embassy in Beirut has, at least for now, allayed some concerns about Syria’s military designs on its neighbour. But the true meaning behind Syria’s diplomatic move is open to interpretation.”
